Bridging Japanese craftsmanship with European precision, Pedrali unveils Kawara, a modular lighting collection designed by Yusuke Kawai. Presented at the 63rd edition of Salone del Mobile, the collection merges cultural heritage with advanced engineering, embodying Kawai’s deep appreciation for sacred architecture and the poetic geometry of Japanese roof tiles.
“When developing creative ideas, I consider technological aspects in parallel,” Kawai shares. “Kawara’s design explores modularity and harmony — inspired by the triangular roofs of temples and shrines.”
The Yusuke Kawai modular lighting Pedrali transforms the timeless design of the Japanese kawara roof tile into a contemporary lighting concept that celebrates environmental responsibility and industrial refinement. Each element reflects Pedrali’s 100% Made in Italy ethos — prioritizing material integrity, precision, and sustainability.

A Shared Vision for Lighting
Pedrali, renowned for its contemporary furniture and lighting, embodies craftsmanship rooted in quality and longevity. The collaboration with Yusuke Kawai aligns perfectly: both share a dedication to simplicity, structure, and sustainable design.
“My philosophy centers on simplicity — structurally and conceptually,” Kawai explains. “Designs that use fewer parts, allow easy assembly, and age gracefully align with Pedrali’s approach.”
Kawara transforms the spirit of Japanese tiles into a versatile, extruded aluminium system. Its modular architecture allows endless configurations: pendant, vertical, horizontal, or floor versions. Designers can choose between continuous linear compositions or adjustable modules for dynamic lighting direction — all defined by elegant restraint.

Where Craftsmanship Meets Industry
Kawai’s challenge was to infuse Japanese artisanal sensitivity into industrial-scale production without losing detail or intention. Every groove, ridge, and joint was refined to 0.1-millimeter precision, ensuring each element assembles with tactile harmony.
“Even with standardized extrusion, I wanted to preserve the soul of Japanese craft,” says Kawai. “By perfecting every detail, we achieved balance between tradition and mass production.”
The Kawara modules’ rounded backs feature connecting grooves that align seamlessly at any angle, creating a rhythm of continuity and flow. Integrated LED strips with dimmers allow full control of brightness and mood — balancing technical flexibility with emotional resonance.

Design That Adapts for a Lifetime
At its core, Kawara is a system of endless reconfiguration. The user can adapt its form to new environments, maintaining both aesthetic longevity and functional purpose.
“Modularity and versatility not only expand creativity,” Kawai concludes, “but ensure lasting value. Even as spaces evolve, the design evolves with them — lighting that can be enjoyed for a lifetime.”
