How to Spark Creativity: 10 Fun Exercises to Unlock Better Ideas

Updated: Nov 9

We ask ourselves “What’s for dinner?” almost every day. Yet, most of us stop after two or three ideas before deciding. But what if you pushed for ten? Chances are, you’d end up with something unexpected—and maybe even delicious.

This concept applies far beyond the kitchen. At work, in design, or in everyday problem-solving, we’re wired to converge quickly on a solution. But according to Brendan Boyle, IDEO partner and founder of the IDEO Play Lab, the secret to truly innovative thinking lies in staying longer in a divergent headspace—where possibilities multiply before decisions narrow them down.

Creativity Ideas

Boyle, whose toy invention studio has developed over 200 products (including Pictionary Air and Plumber Pants), knows that play isn’t just for kids. In his sessions, creativity thrives through fun activities that loosen up the mind and encourage bold, unexpected ideas.

In the Creative Confidence Podcast with IDEO U Dean Suzanne Gibbs Howard, Boyle shares how play and curiosity fuel creativity—and offers 10 quick activities to help teams think more freely.

Try This: The Pencil Questions Exercise

Gather your team and divide into pairs. Give each group a pencil—or simply project an image of one. Then, challenge everyone to come up with as many questions as possible about the pencil in 30 seconds. Aim for at least 10—silly or serious, it doesn’t matter.

When time’s up, share the questions with the group. You’ll quickly notice how creative energy builds as people push past the obvious and start exploring the ridiculous, the profound, and everything in between.

This simple exercise primes your brain for divergent thinking, helping you approach challenges from fresh angles. So, next time you’re stuck—ask yourself not just what’s for dinner, but what else could it be?
